DICK SMITH'S FIFTH RTW FLIGHT | ||
Australian pilot Dick Smith has just completed his 5th flight around the world – and this time he claims it is his last. Dick flew his Cessna Caravan VH-SHW form Bankstown Airport (Sydney, Australia) to Norfolk Island, Funafuti, Canton Island, Christmas Island, Hilo, Monterey, Chicago, New York, St Johns, Santa Maria, Tenerife, Timbuktu, Gao, N’djamena, Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, Murchison Falls, Entebbe, Addis Ababa, Salalah, Bangalore, Medan, Christmas Island, Learmonth, Arkaroola, and back to Bankstown Airport, Sydney. The flight of 27,000 nm and 180 hours flight time was completed over 4 months. Dick advised that the flight went very well, with the only problem being a Tsetse fly at Murchison Falls, Uganda. The highlight of the trip was a solo flight over the snow capped Mountains of the Moon near the Equator on the Uganda/Zaire border. A magnificent flight, however no one would fly with Dick as they were told the area was dangerous and they could be shot down!
