EARTHROUNDERS   PNG  REUNION  2016

Newsletter° 3

October 21, 2015

How to get there?

The reunion is being held near Mount Hagen and Mount Hagen (AYMH) is your final destination whether you are arriving commercially or in your own aircraft. Mount Hagen is located in he centre of PNG in a wide valley in the PNG Highlands at an altitude of 5,300 feet and the location of the reunion centre is at 7,100 feet and is about 10 km out of the town of Mount Hagen.

DOMESTIC FLIGHTS
For those people arriving into Port Moresby (POM) on an International flight you will also need a domestic flight from Port Moresby (POM) to Mount Hagen (HGU). There will be someone to meet you in Port Moresby when you arrive to help you transfer from your international flight to your domestic flight as there are two terminals. You can walk from the international to the domestic terminal. There are no commercial night flights in PNG. Mount Hagen has no lights and is basically a VFR aerodrome despite the fact that Fokker 100 jet aircraft operate in/out Mount Hagen on a daily basis.

FLIGHTS TO/FROM PNG
Air Niugini (PX) flies Internationally from Port Moresby to and from Singapore / Hongkong /Bali /Manilla /Tokyo /Honiara (Solomons) /Nadi (Fiji) /Cairns /Brisbane.

QANTAS LINK flies between Cairns and Port Moresby while QANTAS code shares with Air Niugini between Brisbane and Port Moresby.

THOSE COMING FROM EUROPE
The most efficient way would probably be to find a friendly airline that flies from Europe to Singapore and then book Air Niugini from Singapore to Port Moresby to Mount Hagen. It is not a daily flight between Singapore and Port Moresby but there are more flights each week between Singapore and Port Moresby than the other Asian destinations. It would also be possible to come to PNG via Australia and this would mean that you would transit through Cairns, Brisbane or Sydney. There are daily direct flight from Cairns and Brisbane to Port Moresby and onto Mount Hagen while the daily flights out of Sydney would go via Brisbane. You should also book your flight from Port Moresby to your final destination of Mount Hagen.

THOSE COMING FROM THE USA/SOUTH AMERICA
It is generally the most efficient to go via Australia rather than Asia as there are daily flights to PNG through Australia. The flights across the Pacific go to either Brisbane or Sydney and there are daily flights from Brisbane and Sydney to Port Moresby to Mount Hagen that you can book with either Air Niugini or QANTAS. You should also book through to your final destination of Mount Hagen.

THOSE COMING FROM AUSTRALIA
There are daily flights from Cairns, Brisbane and Sydney that connect through Port Moresby to Mount Hagen on the same day. Those traveling on Australian Passports should note that a visa is required prior to your arrival in PNG. Visas can be obtained at the PNG Consuls in Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane or Cairns.

We will be offering pre and post reunion tours in PNG.

THOSE FLYING THEMSELVES TO MOUNT HAGEN, PNG
Mount Hagen is an approved entry port for PNG and I would suggest an arrival time say between 09.30 hrs and 12.00 hrs local time. Should you wish to fly your aircraft direct to Mount Hagen or via another PNG port of entry then please let me know and I will help you plan your last sector into and through PNG.

VISA’s
A 60 day tourist visa can be obtained on arrival in Port Moresby at at no cost for those traveling on a European, USA or most Western Countries passport. A visa must be obtained prior to your departure from Australia for those travelling on an Australian passport

July 18 , 2016:
Great news from our host in PNG, Bob Bates:
"PNG Visas can again be obtained on arrival for Australians passport holders and there is no longer a requirement to obtain them in advance. They are now issued on arrival in Port Moresby at no cost."
